Help with paying your rent
Local Housing Allowance (formerly Housing Benefit) is the way Housing Benefit is calculated for tenants renting accommodation from private landlords.
LHA was introduced in 2008 and applies to private sector tenants who make a new claim for benefit and for existing customers on Housing Benefit who change address or move into private sector accommodation. If you are on a low income or need assistance with making rent payments, find out if you are eligible for assistance from your local authority.
LHA payments are based on the number of rooms you require in your household, and the amount payable may vary from area to area even within the same local authority. It is not paid based on the size of property that you live in but the size of property your household needs. If you live in a property that is larger than you need, your payment may not cover your rent. You will need to find alternative ways to meet your rent payments.
